B8: IA-based unsaturated polyester resins and derivatives as ligand for abrasive

This action was focused on the substitution of a commercially available phenol-formaldehyde resin with IA-based monomers and unsaturated polyester resins developed in the technical action B1 and B3. These reactive bio-monomers and -polymers were used to replace phenol-formaldehyde resins which are responsible of the dangerous emissions during the curing process having a detrimental effect on the environment and on the human health.

At the beginning many studies were dedicated to study the adapted composition of the IA-based monomers and unsaturated polyesters inducing a complete curing under the processing conditions. These studies were carried out with DSC and oscillating rotational rheometer simulating the production process for the flexible abrasive tapes.

At the beginning many efforts were dedicated to study the adapted composition of the thermal-curing mixture containing unsaturead biopolyesters, DBI, DEI and a commercially available thermal initiator. These studies were carried out with DSC and oscillating rotational rheometer (ORR) simulating the thermal treatment adopted into the oven for the process of the flexible abrasive tape production. The thermo-curable mixtures were added with a methacryktaed monomer,  such as HPMA, to increase the reactivity under the processing conditions.

Some prototypes of the flexible abrasive tape on two substrates, such as PET or paper sheets, under the processing facilities were prepared by using the above described experimental conditions. The thermal treatment imparting successfully an enhancement of the viscosity of the liquid layer after the first thermal treatment at 90°C for 45 min in oven. Then a second layer with the same chemical compositions was deposited on the previous one and cured at 115°C for 45 min, as expected. The production of one hundred meters of the flexible abrasive prototype were obtained and some samples were sent to stakeholders.
