Synthesis of IA-based monomers and reactive diluents

The production of IA-based dialkylester derivatives will be obtained by monoalcohols in bulk conditions (no solvents) in presence of acidic catalysts in a temperatures range between 120 and 160°C. The commercially available aliphatic monoalcohols derived from renewable resources will be suitably selected to synthesize IA- based di-ester derivatives. The best candidates are ethanol (obtained by production of biodiesel), propanol or butanol. The task is to prepare reactive diluents for the thermo- and UV-curable reactions fully derived from renewable resources having similar reactivity to di-(meth)acrylates. The used catalysts will be acetates of zinc or copper or titanates. The conventional two step condensation reactions can be applied to production of the necessary amounts of IA-based ester derivatives in a lab scale (6-8 kg per week), since IA is asymmetric molecules with different reactivity on two acidic groups (see scheme C1.1). Under these conditions, the slightly excess of used alcohol can be applied to reach the complete conversion of acidic groups. The monomers are expected to be completely biodegradable, but the compostability is strongly dependent on the catalysts residues which can have potential toxic activity on the microorganisms. We believe that compostability can be obtained with zinc or copper acetate as catalysts. These IA-based monomers can be also applied as plasticizers for PVC as alternative to well-known commercially available saturated analogs derived from adipic acid for replacing the phthalates ones.
